Unit 10 Digital Photography Task 3

Thaddeus O'Connor-Dunphie
Task 3

Framing

Macro

Macro is a type of extreme close up photography where the subject of whatever is in the picture looks much larger than it would look like in rea life, for example a picture of an insect would be very detailed and look gigantic to what it would actually look like in real life

Landscape

Landscape photography is always horizontal as it fills in as much space as it can. This type of photography mostly revolves around photos of world nature however there are also landscape pictures of manmade buildings and structures.

Portrait

Portrait photography is the opposite of landscape photography as it is always horizontal. This type of photography usually revolves around people’s faces and their expressions it tries to show mood in the pictures. Sometimes it may just be one person other times it may be many. However just because it shows off their expression of people’s faces it can also show off the background and entire body of the person.

Distance

Distance in photography can vary between different types which are close ups and long shots.  You get these different shots by adjusting the lens of the camera to either zoom in or zoom out. Close ups are specific to one object for example the picture below is of a tennis ball, you can see the shading on it and the colour, material stands out. Whereas the long shot photo of the pier looks as if it is far away and you’re at the start of the pier looking ahead which is why you can’t see as much detail on the lamps or fences.

Angle

High angle

A high angled shot is a shot that looks down on someone from above like a bird’s eye view. This angle is usually used when the person which is being looked down on is supposed to be powerless because the photo is looking down on them as if you’re looking down them because you’re the one looking at the picture

Low angle

A Low angled shot is the opposite of what a high angled shot is being that this time the picture is taken from below not from above. This time it makes you feel like your small looking up at whatever it is that the picture is of.

Canted angle

Canted angle is a camera angle that is deliberately tilted to one side, the reason for this is because this sort photography is meant to be used to show off certain themes such as madness, or maybe it might be used in action scenes etc.

Wide angle

A wide angled shot is a phytography camera shot which is used to show the entire object, human figure or whatever it is being taken a picture of. This shot also tries to capture the surroundings of whatever it is the picture is being taken of. This would be to show off the natural habitats and nature of the picture.

Level

High level

This type of photography is very similar to high angled photography as it is from above looking down onto something and then taking the picture to see what it looks like from above in bird’s eye view, to make you feel big when looking at the picture.

Low level

This type of photography is very similar to low angled photography as it is from below looking upwards at something and then taking the picture to see what it looks like from below to make you feel smaller when looking at the picture.

Composition

Rule of thirds

The rule of thirds is  when you have taken a photograph and drawn over the picture with four lines, two horizontal lines and two vertical lines crossing over each other creating nine squares. When you have the nine squares on top of your photo you will see how it is separated out for example a picture of a tree might just be seen in one square to the left while the sun or sky may be in its own square to top right. So it separates out the photograph allowing you to focus on certain parts of the picture.

Foreground

Foreground is used in photography and film making, in film making it is the part of a scene which is nearest to the front of the viewer and just like films it goes the same for pictures it is the scene which picture is nearest to and in front of the viewer.

Background

Background used in photography is what you can see surrounding the main focus of what is in the picture, for example for a picture of a tree the background would be what is surrounding the tree and where the tree is located like a woods and in the grass etc.

Focus

Depth of field

The depth of field is how far a certain distance is between the nearest and the farthest objects which are visible in the scene or photograph, they appear much more sharp in an image. The lens of a camera can only focus on one distance at a time and the decrease in the sharpness is shown on each side of the focused distance. So the sharpness is imperceptible by viewing it under normal circumstances.

As you can see the can of coke in the middle looks very sharp and focused however because of the reason that the camera lens can only focus on one distance at a time the other two cans of coke are out of focus and look blurry and nowhere near as sharp as the one in the middle.

Sharp

Sharp focus is the sharpness in photography and how focused the picture is or not, for example if a photo is blurry and does not look as good as what it does in real life then that means your picture is not sharp. However if your photo has a lot of detail and looks just like what it does in real life then that means the sharpness of your photo is good as you have focused it very well.

Soft

Soft focus is the opposite of sharp focus so the lens form images that are blurred and the picture does not look as near as good than what it does in real life. However a soft focus is not the same as an out focus image there are differences between these both being that the effect cannot just be achieved by simply defocusing the sharp lens

Zoom

Digital

Digital zoom is a method of increasing the view so that you can see things in much more detail. For example the picture below shows a bird on a tree stump. By looking at the first picture you don’t notice that the bird has something in his mouth, and if you do notice it you still can’t tell what it is that the bird has in its mouth. So when the digital zoom is put to action it makes the picture look like its much closer to the bird and it has much more detail. The bird has an insect in his mouth and you can see the bird more clearly. So digital zoom helps see pictures more clearly and it is used on cameras. However with digital zoom the pixels are stretched as the picture is only focusing on one particular thing in the picture below it is the bird, this is why the background is bad quality and only the bird can be seen in good quality because the camera is only focused on the bird and nothing else. In addition to this you are only able to zoom into the picture once you have actually taken the photo.

Analogue

Analogue zoom is a process where the movement of a few lenses inside of the camera results in the magnification of the image, without compromising or deteriorating the quality of the image. Analogue zoom simply captures a perspective that is close than the original perspective. Digital zoom on the other hand is a process where the pixels of a digital image are stretched out, and the resulting picture is focusing on just one part of the perspective if the lens.

This is a picture if analogue lens

Optical

On a digital camera, optical zoom is a true zoom feature. It allows you to zoom in (or out) on the subject in the LCD or viewfinder. This will enable you to get a closer view of the subject before taking your picture. So for example if you are taken a picture of a squirrel on a tree you would want to be quiet so that you don’t scare it off but you would also want to get closer so that you can get a better shot of the squirrel. With the optical zoom you are able to zoom in before you even take the photo allowing you to stay back from the squirrel but zoom in onto it as if you was sitting right next to it taking the picture.

Unit 10 Digital Photography Task 2

E-Newspapers                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                      Photographs on the front cover to E-newspapers would be the picture of whatever is being mentioned in the main story that is being published in the news. For example if the main story was about a football then there would be photos of footballers and football teams, these pictures would be very detailed so you can see them clearly. There would also be huge bold text as the title of the paper so that it stands out and catches the reader’s eye.

Here is an example of a front cover to an E-newspaper as you can see the letters are huge saying ChemManager Europe which is the name of the E-Newspaper

E-Magazines
Photography featured in the front covers of E-Magazines would be quite similar to the photos in front covers of E-Newspapers. Whatever the magazine is about would have photos that relate to the topic featured in the front cover. For example if the magazine was about a TV show then on the front cover there would be actors which are very recognisable that everyone knows. From this you can instantly tell if this is what you want to read or not if you don’t have an interest in the programme you know not to read it.

DVD Covers                                                                                                                                          Photography which is shown on the front cover of a DVD film have images of the main characters which are stared in the film. There may also be a picture or an important location where the film is set in. In addition to this the cover may just have a prop or something that represents the movie for example on the front of superman’s DVD Cover it has a big letter S which represents him so upon seeing that you instantly know that this film is superman. However most DVD covers have a picture of the main characters which are featured in the film such as the Lego movie which has the main characters on the front cover.

Books
Photography which is shown on the covers of books is varied between the different type of book it is, for example if it is a toddler’s/ children’s book then the cover would be filled with colour and pictures.  However books for adults/teenagers are much more mature and usually just have the title of the book along with a background that represents the story. Below are some examples.

This is a more mature book aimed at an older age group and you can see the front cover is very dark and dull, with the title of the book placed at the top. There is also an outline picture of a dragon which gives you the idea that this story must have something to do with the fantasy world etc.

This is a cover of a children's book called the very hungry caterpillar, you can instantly tell it is for children by the colours which are used, it is very bright and stands out so that it attracts children, also the picture of the caterpillar looks like it could have been drawn by a child this is so that children can relate to the picture.

Instruction/ training manuals
Pictures in instructions and training manuals would be pictures that represent or show how to do something. For example if you buy a tent it would usually come with a instruction or training manual which will tell you how to set up the tent with text and pictures. First you have to set up the pegs and hammer them into the ground, the instruction training manual would show this with a picture of a person being real or a cartoon setting up the pegs and hammering them into the ground.  So the phtos are usually put together step by step like a comic.

Unit 10 Digital Photography Task 1

Components of a digital camera and equipment
Features of a digital cameras is that when you click the button to take the picture on a digital camera, an aperture opens up at the front of the camera. Once this happens a light shines in through the lens of the camera. There is an electronic equipment within the digital camera called CCD which captures the light rays and turns them into electrical signals.

This is an example of a digital Camera which I found on google images be searching Camera and I took it from this website                                                                                                                          http://www.amazon.co.uk/Digital-Cameras/b?ie=UTF8&node=560836

Manual mode is a function in a camera that allows you to have complete control over everything for example zooming in and out or focusing, you can adjust the focus of the cameras lens by hand. A camera lens also known as photographic lens or photographic objective is an optical lens or assembly of lenses used in conjunction with a camera body and mechanism to make images of objects either on photographic or on other media capable of storing an image electronically on the camera..

This is a picture of camera lens which I found on google images by searching camera lens and I took it from this website                                                                                                                      http://rockin-photogs.com/a-guide-to-camera-lens-terms-types-and-definitions/
DSLR is a device in a camera that uses mirrors in the camera to direct what you are taking a photo of to your eyes so that you know what your photograph is going to look like and be of. Automatic mode in a camera is where you don’t have control over certain things of the camera such as the lens aperture and the shutter speed because it is all automatic doing it by itself. However some drawbacks is that you might want control over the camera for example if you’re in a location with poor lighting you want to adjust the camera to make it brighter it would require you to use manual mode however if you’re in a situation where you want to take a photo which is focused and still then using automatic mode would be the best.

This is a picture of a DSLR camera which I found on google images by searching DSLR cameras and I took it from this website                                                                                   https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Digital_single-lens_reflex_camera

You can also take photographs on smartphones and advantages of this are that they are very light and portable allowing you to just take them out to take a photograph at any time of day in addition to this there are a huge amount of apps dedicated to photography which allow you to tweak exposure and add frames, add filters remove colour or even create slow motion movies. However some disadvantages is that they will not have as good quality or storage as a camera.  The viewfinder in a camera is what you look through when you are going to take a picture of something It is the main optical system. The lens of a camera is what allows the camera to be able to view everything it is the eyes of the camera that allows you to look at throught. Cameras will always have memory cards which are devicies put into the camera that store the data from lots of different photos, when it memory card is full it prevents you taking any more pictures. So you are required to change the memory card with a new one and if you would like to keep all the pictures you can download them from you memory card oin computes etc.
the viewfinder. This is an example of the camera on a smart phone which I found on google images and took from this website

Cameras also have a device called the Flash, this is a great feature to a camera as it illuminates dark places. For example if you was taking a photo in dark lighting or outside at night time then the camera would produce a flash to create light for a split second so that when the photo is taken it is clear and brighter than it would be if it was just taken as an ordinary picture. There is also a feature known as the photograph's exposure this determines how light or dark your picture will appear once it has been taken by your camera. So this allows you to determine if you should take the shot or not and adjust the settings. There are also cameras which are called colour cameras, a camera of a special design for making colour-separation. For example maybe your picture has come out red and bright because of the background well the colour camera allows you to remove certain colours so you could remove or even add colours to be in your photograph. Lighting is the illumination of scenes to be photographed. A photograph records light, colour, and shade; lighting is important in controlling the image. In many cases even illumination is desired to give an accurate photograph of the scene you’re capturing. In a camera there is a setting called the White Balance setting and it lets you choose or change the colour in your pictures. You can make the colours brighter to make it look warmer, or darker to make it look colder etc. Your camera’s White Balance gives you more control over colour.

Hand-held cameras also known as hand-held shooting is a filmmaking and video production technique. The camera is held in the operator's hands instead of being put onto a tripod or other base. .  In photography, a tripod is used to stabilize and elevate a camera, a flash unit, or other photographic equipment. All photographic tripods have three legs and a mounting head to couple with a camera. Hand-held cameras are used because they are sized for travel so you can take them almost anywhere. In addition to this hand held cameras also allow greater freedom of motion during filming.  However a tripod would be heavy and hard to carry around meaning you have less freedom of motion when filming and you cannot really travel with then as you do with handheld cameras
